Reasons to Prevent Weeds

  • Weeds give your lawn and property an unsightly look.
  • There are eco-friendly ways to block weeds, including mulch.
  • Sprays and treatments can block weeds more permanently than pulling.

How to Control Landscape Weeds

Step 1 Mulch

A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps plants by keeping roots cooler, holding in moisture, adding organic matter to the soil, and blocking sunlight from reaching weeds, making it harder for them to grow. For extra weed protection, lay landscape cloth down on the dirt before you add the layer of mulch.

PRO TIP
Leave an edge around the base of trees, shrubs, and plants so the mulch does not cause rotting.

Step 2 Weed Preventer

Weed prevention products create an invisible barrier against weeds. Special care must be taken when applying these products near plants that you want to keep. Protect plants as you shake on the granules and then water them to activate. A 2-in-1 product can prevent weeds and fertilize at the same time. If you are planting new seedlings, you want to wait until the seedlings are 2-3 inches tall before using a weed preventer nearby.

PRO TIP
Avoid getting granules on leaves since it can burn the leaves.

Step 3 Spot Treatments

If you are removing individual weeds by hand, try to pick them out of the dirt with the roots attached to prevent them from coming back. You can also spray a weed killer directly onto the weeds, which helps make sure nothing is left behind to grow.

Block weed spray
When spraying individual weeds, block plants from any spray that could drift onto them.
PRO TIP
Use a piece of cardboard to block the spray from drifting onto the plants you want to protect.
