How to Use Pesticides Safely
Step 1 Read the Label
Look at directions, warnings and cautions before opening the container. This will help avoid mistakes like accidentally dousing yourself with chemicals.
Step 2 Store Appropriately
Keep chemicals out of reach for children and pets when not in use. Also, keep the product in its original container and with the lid on. Avoid storing near anything that could cause a spark or flame.
Step 3 Anticipate Accidents
Note your surroundings. Is your grill within the spray path? Are children indoors, or at least a safe distance away from you? Before opening the container, stop, think and remove the risk.
Step 4 Protect Yourself
Wear a long-sleeved shirt, full-length pants, gloves and goggles. Wear a hat when spraying overhead. Plus, avoid inhaling chemicals by wearing a dust mask.
Step 5 Avoid Smoking, Eating or Drinking
Eating, drinking or smoking can cause you to unknowingly ingest chemicals, so it’s best to avoid these activities when spraying.
Step 6 Cover Food and Water
Use caution around food and water sources for livestock or pets. Additionally, be careful not to contaminate aquariums or fish ponds.
Step 7 Use Separate Sprayers
Avoid plant damage by using separate containers for plant food, herbicides and insecticides.
Step 8 Clean up When Done
Wash your hands and face with soap and water, change into clean clothing and shoes, and wash your clothes immediately.
Step 9 Ensure Safe Disposal
Follow the label instructions for proper disposal. Never dispose down sinks, toilets, sewers, or street drains.
This prevents accidental poisoning of people and animals as well as contamination of waterways.
Step 10 Watch for Signs of Illness
If you’re feeling ill during or shortly after using a chemical, get medical attention. Take the label from the chemical with you.
