Rotary tools, including Dremel, are especially handy to have around the home or workshop. How effective they are at any particular task depends on having the right attachment. In addition to the grinding stone attachment, there is an additional attachment that screws onto the end of the tool to align the tool at the correct angle for sharpening.
How to Sharpen the Blade On Your Lawn Mower
Step 1 Remove the Mower Blade
You will need to remove the blade from the mower. Drain the gas out of the tank, and make sure the oil fill is securely closed, because you will need to tip the mower on its side to remove the blade. Use a wrench or a socket to remove the nut that secures the blade.
Step 2 Attach the Sharpening Accessory on the Rotary Tool
Dremel makes an effective blade-sharpening attachment that uses two pieces. A sharpening stone and a guide that is attached to the end of the tool. The guide helps position the grinder at the proper angle to sharpen the blade.
Step 3 Sharpen the Blade
Run the grinding stone across the top edge of the blade. Only sharpen the cutting portion of the blade, which is the last 4-6 inches of the blade. As you sharpen, you will see shiny, fresh metal exposed. Look for an even cutting surface.
Step 4 Reattach the Blade
Firmly reattach the blade to the mower with the fixing nut or bolt. Adhere to the manufacturer’s suggested torque specs for the fastener.
